Never before has a console that promised so much seem like it's actually going to
deliver those promises... Upwards of 20 million polys/sec CGI quality real-time graphics DVD movie playback Backward compatability with existing PS software You name it the playstation can do!
Almost everyone who can read knows a little about the PS2 and everyone knows that
it is going to be big, real big. However, I have some worries about the all singing
all dance wonder machine.
First off the most immediate problem is that the Playstation2's games are
going to be huge. This is going to cause great strain on all but the largest of publishers.
As a direct result of this vastness in games, production times will be very long. To give
you an idea here's an example: Zelda on the N64 took 3 years
to complete and that was on a cartrige. Compared to the average cart size(256MB) a DVD disc
is about 18 times bigger!! But I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.... |

Next up is the backward compatability issue. As many of you are aware backward compatability
always sound good in theory but rarely works. What usually happens is that developers just make games
that play the same as they would on the older system but with sprused up graphics. This
is not what PS2 was created for so hopefully this scenario won't happen.
My third, and perhaps most frightening, fear is that the Playstation2
will become a casual gamers paradise with half-arsed games developed for it and
sequal after sequal being released. Thankfully this is the least likely to happen
as the Playstation2 will have developers like Namco, Squaresoft,
Capcom, Konami, etc making it's games...which is a releaf to know!Phew. Even though it still hasn't been written, the Playstation2's history is nearly a dead cert. Market leadership is almost gauranteed unless the world of gamers relises that life away from TV and consoles really is fun. HHHHHMMMMM... |
